Call for papers: Special Issue on Humanity in Engineering Education
Call for papers: Humanity in Engineering Education
We are delighted to announce a special issue dedicated to showcasing the research presented at the recent South African Society of Engineering Education (SASEE) Conference 2023. This special issue aims to capture the most important contributions emerging from the conference, providing a platform for researchers to disseminate their work to a wider audience.
SASEE 2023 brought together engineering education practitioners and researchers from various universities and institutions, and fostered vibrant discussions on Humanity in Engineering Education, the conference theme. Contributions focused on issues relating to ensuring a balanced and sustainable connection between humanity and technology along with topics related to well-being and productive learning. The contributions, keynotes, workshops and discussions also reminded us of the critical need for students who graduate from our engineering programmes to have agency and purpose in the world, and that they are equipped to address the needs of society for the sustainable existence of equitable life on earth.
Now, we invite all conference participants and other researchers in the field to submit their original research papers to this special issue. We are particularly interested in manuscripts that extend or build upon the ideas, findings, and discussions that took place during the conference but other contributions are also welcome. If your paper or extended abstract was accepted for publication in the SASEE conference proceedings, you are encouraged to rework/re-orienting/enhance your contribution using the feedback gained from your presentation to make it publishable in this forum.
Subject areas of interest for this special issue include but are not limited to:
- Student experience, learning and success
- Engineering education in practice
- Online learning and artificial intelligence
- Engineering ethics
- Human-centred design
- Engineering and the workplace
Submission guidelines: Authors should adhere to the journal's guidelines for manuscript preparation and submission, available on the journal's website. Manuscripts must be original and should not be under consideration for publication elsewhere. Please choose the special issue option when submitting.
Important Dates:
- Manuscript submission deadline (extension): 18 September (6 October 2023)

This special issue presents a unique opportunity to share your research outcomes and contribute to the advancement of the field of engineering education in South Africa, and beyond. We remind you that the Southern Journal of Engineering Education is the official journal of SASEE but serves the international community, given that it ‘values critical perspectives on the unique challenges facing engineering education in South Africa and the Global South’.
We look forward to receiving your submissions and working together to create a collection of outstanding research articles that reflect the exciting presentations at SASEE 2023.
Sincerely,
Bruce Kloot, Editor-in-Chief, SJEE
